At the end of this month the Atlanta Martial Arts Center will be hosting sensei Erik Paulson for a mixed martial arts/combat submission wrestling seminar. We normally have sensei Erik in every six months here at the school. He is a major influence on many of the programs here at the school. Erik is considered one of the pioneers of the mixed martial arts. He has a background in multiple martial arts including Bruce Lee's Jeet Kune Do / Jun Fan Gung Fu, Erik is a full instructor under Sifu Dan Inosanto, he also holds instructor rank in Thai boxing, judo and many more.

The thing that makes Erik unique is his level of organization in what he teaches. I have studied with various different instructors from the martial arts industry and more often than not they generally will teach you what works for them. Erik has an approach where he will demonstrate a set of things and help you find out what individual technique works best for you and your game. With this in mind any level practitioner or any level instructor can come train with him and come away with valuable information that will help them with their goals in the martial arts.

If you have not taken advantage of the opportunity I highly suggest catching one of Erik's events you will be glad you did.

Developing a team training environment.

One of the things I talk to the students about on a regular basis is the importance of having a team that you can train with that will create the correct learning environment. Often times it is thought that in the martial arts the harder you go in your training the better you will become. More often than not this is not true, in my 33 years in the martial arts what I have witnessed is the guys that go hard generally end up injured and fallout of training or the guys on the other side of the room that are training more intelligently will catch up to them and their ego can handle the reality that they were wrong.

I'm not saying that one should never trained with intensity this is important too. But if you have a good group of training partners, what I normally referred to as a intelligent training team, you have the ability to safely try new things which you would not normally try against an aggressive opponent. Having this environment not only gives you the ability to train longer but also to train in a more intelligent manner.

Sometimes this type of training is difficult to find. That is why it is a common saying that a good training partner in the martial arts is worth his weight in gold. So if you happen to find just one partner who has this mentality of training much less a group of people you are very fortunate.

This last Saturday we were fortunate enough to have Ajarn Greg Nelson at the school to teach a Thai boxing seminar. In my opinion Greg's approach the Thai boxing is one of the most cutting edge look at the system out there. Due to his experience in the mixed martial arts and the fact that he is produce the most champions to go through the UFC of any school out there gives him a very unique approach to what works and what does not work out there. If you missed this last event I highly recommend that you make plans to attend the 2013 February 2 event that we have Ari scheduled for next year.
