Self Defense class Woodstock Georgia Hand Gun and Self Defense Training

On October 15 we will be having 8° black belt master Pedro Sauer coming to the Atlanta martial arts center. Pedro Sauer is one of the very few non-Gracie 8° black belt in the world. He is also the head of our Gracie Jiu-Jitsu program here at the Atlanta martial arts center in Woodstock Georgia. We usually will have master Sour come to the school every six months. The Atlanta martial arts center is a regional training center for the Pedro Sauer Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Association.

One of the themes that will separate Gracie Jiu-Jitsu from other forms of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is that Gracie Jiu-Jitsu focuses more on the aspect of self-defense and being able to defend yourself on the street. This fits in perfectly with the programs here at the Atlanta martial arts center because the majority of what we do is to prepare you for a real world encounter.

Gracie Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and self defense in Woodstock Georgia

If you look at martial arts as a whole, you will see that almost all arts share one or more of 4 basic ranges that they will focus on. Some systems will focus on one area or range of fighting more than others, but each range is in existence because they are a universal truth in combat, meaning that regardless of the art / system, they are a reality that cannot be denied or ignored. You will end up in one or all of them at some time while fighting.

Some examples of the 4 basic ranges are: Long Range Weapons, Kickboxing (striking) range, Pummeling (standing grappling) range and a ground fighting or grappling range. If your goal is to be a complete combat artist, you will want to do some training in each of the 4 basic ranges. This is generally referred to as cross training. Cross training will increase your ability to stay in your element if in a fight and will increase your ability to force your opponent out of his if he is not as well educated or trained in the different ranges.

This is one of the reasons for the choice of systems and the arrangement of the schedule at AMAC, to offer the opportunity for those interested in cross training to do so in an intelligent and safe way.

As always thank you for your support!

Gracie Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and self defense in Woodstock Georgia

Last week in our Gracie Jiu-Jitsu class we were studying how to escape the site control position. This week we have been looking at methods to control someone if you have them in the site control position as well as methods of attack. Most of the basic attacks we look at inside control position are based on joint locking but you must also consider the possibility of striking in the beginning. Even though the fundamental class primarily looks at joint locking it is important to always consider where and when you can strike your opponent or where and when they can strike you. There are many variations in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu that you can learn from the many positions, but once you start considering the possibility of striking it shortens the list of possibilities significantly. This mindset is important especially if you are training for self-defense and not competition.

You have four basic fundamental attacks on the arm inside control position. Two are based on a straight arm position and the other two are based on a bit arm position. One thing I always tell my students to consider is that the arm can only do two basic things and that is to contract or expand. Due to the nature of the joints of the arm they can contract or expand on many different planes but generally it will break down to just that, a straight arm or a bit arm. It is important to initially see the principles like this because it keeps it simple and simple is good if you are attempting to do a technique in a stressful situation.

Gracie Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and self defense in Woodstock Georgia

This week in our Gracie Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu program we are studying how to escape from the side control position. If you imagine that you are in a fight, you are on the ground on your back, and your opponent is laying on top of you chest to chest pinning you to the ground so you cannot move. This is the position that we will be taking a look at this week in class. We will be working on how to escape this position and after escaping regain a dominant position on the opponent in order to control the fight. There are many ways to escape this position what makes the techniques from Gracie Jiu-Jitsu above average is that they are based on leverage, body position and good body mechanics. Why is this important because if you can imagine the same scenario that I spoke about above and then imagine that the guy that is pinning you on the ground is 150 pounds heavier than you are and 20 years younger. With this in mind if your technique is based on muscle or strength you might have a problem dealing with this larger opponent. But if your technique is based on leverage and proper structure of the body it is possible to steal escape safely and regain control of your opponent.

This line of thought is also important if you are striving to be a lifetime martial artist. As you age you can become weaker and your athletic ability could slowly start to leave you. With this in mind if you're techniques are based on the former they will be leaving you as well. That is why it is important to base what you learn on proper structure and timing. Currently this mindset is not the standard in martial arts, most schools are based on using Sprint and explosive power to accomplish their goals. This is great if you plan to retire from your martial arts career around the age of 35 which is not uncommon in the sports-based world.

Gracie Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in Woodstock Georgia

One of the programs we teach at the Atlanta martial arts center here in Woodstock Georgia is the combat submission wrestling program under Eric Paulson. CSW is one of our primary no-gi training programs. One of the great things about CSW event is specifically designed for fighting without a Gi. This is important because some programs that are designed to learn in a uniform that is just transferred over to a no-gi program will lack some of the controls and mechanics that are important in this type of training. The following is a video showing you some of the moves that are taught in combat submission wrestling.

Gracie Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in Woodstock Georgia

We are currently expanding our Gracie Jiu-Jitsu program here at the school in Woodstock Georgia. One of the classes we are adding to our program is a Gracie Jiu-Jitsu takedown and throwing class. This class will focus on the pummeling range. When you see two people standing and they clinch each other trying to control each other our twist each other to the ground this is the pummeling range. This is a common position to end up in even for people who are untrained in fighting methods. You can watch any video on YouTube and it is not uncommon to see the fights start out with strikes and then end up in a standing wrestling match. Since this is a common range in combat it is important to take time and study this area intelligently so that you are prepared if you end up in the situation in a fight.

Personally I look at to possible themes that can happen in this range, one is called Randori. Randori is a training method from judo. In the second I generally refer to as pummeling, I was first introduced the pummeling in a system called combat submission wrestling from my teacher Eric Paulson. Because of my background in judo, Jiu-Jitsu, and combat submission wrestling this class will cover both of these concepts. Our goal with this class is to teach the student the ability to control someone in this range and if they choose to take them to the ground and continue with their Jiu-Jitsu game. Another benefit from this past ability to stop someone who is trying to take you to the ground. It is a common statement around the school that if you want to learn to stop something you would should first learn how to do it well. So if you are not training some sort of pummeling or standing grappling in your game now you should be. The lack of this training will leave a large hole in your overall self-defense or fighting game.

Gracie Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in Woodstock Georgia

In this week in a Gracie Jiu-Jitsu class here in Woodstock Georgia we are going over the side control position and how to find various submissions from the side control position. If your opponent is on the ground and on his back facing up and you are chest to chest with him holding him down on the ground this is considered a side control position in Gracie Jiu-Jitsu. You have many options from this position to attack the opponent you may also choose to go into a more dominant position which is the full mount position. The mount position is when you are seated on top of your opponent holding them on the ground. One of the first things you should consider when dealing with opponent inside control position is your ability to maintain control of that position. If the opponent escapes you will not have the ability to finish the fight. This is another area that is studied in class is your ability to intelligently control a larger opponent using body position, leverage, and positioning of the body.

Sometimes the ability to control the opponent is more important than the ability to submit to the opponent. For instance I teach a lot of law enforcement and SWAT teams around the state of Georgia, their focus when they reached the side control position is just that of control. They may not seek to do a joint lock unless the situation is forced into that position by the opponent. This is also important for civilian for instance if you had to control someone who is a young adult or close friend and you did not want to hurt them.

Gracie Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in Woodstock Georgia

This week in our Gracie Brazilian jujitsu class we are looking into ways to sweep your opponent when he is inside your guard. There are many options when you have an opponent in your guard position, some tend to stress submissions. Though I do work a lot of submissions from the guard position generally I will only catch them when my opponent makes a mistake or reacts to my tent to sweep him. Taking self-defense on the street into consideration if I am in this situation I would much rather sweep my opponent and move into a dominant position then to sit in the guard position and try to catch a submission. In a self-defense situation on the street is much safer to do the sweep and move to the dominant position is also easier to finish the encounter from that position unless the opponent makes a mistake that you can capitalize on. One other thing to take into consideration is if the opponent is punching you, if he is doing so the guard position becomes less of a dominant position to be in.

Why is this line of thought important? Because the majority of people get into the martial arts in order to learn self-defense in case they get into a situation on the street. This self-defense based thought is what Gracie Brazilian jiu-jitsu was designed for. Though it can be used and is used every day in a sporting environment it's foundational techniques for design to work in a real world situation. This is an important thing to know if you are looking for a Gracie jiu-jitsu school. Take the time to ask the head instructor of the school you are visiting if they are more of a sport based school or a self-defense school.

Gracie Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in Woodstock Georgia

Is this Saturday we will be having our first sub affiliation training seminar. Currently we are responsible for 15 schools around the United States and their Jiu-Jitsu programs. Throughout the year I will visit each school and give 2 to 3 seminars to help them develop the curriculum and the various training drills required for Gracie Jiu-Jitsu. But this Saturday were going to have all of our sub affiliates come to the Atlanta martial arts center and join us for a three-hour Jiu-Jitsu seminar. This seminar is a great opportunity to meet all of our sub affiliates and get to know them better. One of the great things about the martial arts is that it helps build relationships and gives you the opportunity to meet new people.

We are hoping in the future to be able to do the seminars 3 to 4 times a year as we grow our Jiu-Jitsu sub affiliation. If you live in the Woodstock Georgia area and you are looking for a clean safe environment to learn the martial arts feel free to drop in anytime at our school and take a free class.

Gracie Jiu-Jitsu in Woodstock Georgia

This week in our Gracie Jiu-Jitsu class we are training on how to pass the guard. When only groom a lot of people will use their legs to contain you or keep you controlled. This is one learning to get around the legs, in order to get to a position of dominance and control your own you have to have the ability to pass the legs so that you can get to the side control position and then work your way into the mount position. Learning the past and when traffic this position is what we are working on this week. There are many ways to do this but you want to choose a method that is based on leverage and control of your opponent. This is what Gracie Jiu-Jitsu does best, all of the techniques in Gracie Jiu-Jitsu were design to be based on body mechanics and leverage in order to allow a smaller opponent to survive and win against a larger opponent.
This also extremely important to choose a school where you can accomplish your training in a nonthreatening and safe environment. It is not uncommon in the martial arts to see the people who actually need to learn something to defend themselves be scared off from a class because of a person's bad attitude in class. This is something that the Atlanta martial arts Center does best.

Jiu-Jitsu in Woodstock GA

This week our Gracie jiu-jitsu class is studying methods to get into the mount position from a side control position. The mount position is considered one of the most dominant positions to be in if you are in a ground fight. You have opportunities to strike the opponents as well as opportunities to do joint locks on them. Also if you are smaller than your opponent, the mount position is one of the best positions to be in in order to control that opponent.

Woodstock Georgia Gracie Jiu-Jitsu

This week in class we are studying escapes from the side headlock position. It is common in a fight for people to grab the head and try to twist you down to the ground. This is one of the reasons you will end up in this position on the ground in a ground fight. with this in mind it is a good idea to study intelligent methods of escape from this position. And that is a good reason we study Gracie Jiu-Jitsu at the Atlanta martial arts center. Since the techniques and Gracie Jiu-Jitsu are designed to work for it weaker smaller individual, it is a good study for someone who is interested in studying a true self-defense that will work for them in a situation on the street. This is the area we specialize at the Atlanta martial arts center, all of our systems focus on real-world events and real world self-defense.

Jiu-Jitsu in Woodstock GA

Alan Baker of the Atlanta Martial Arts CEnter in Woodstock GA teaching a Gracie Jiu-Jitsu Seminar at the Combat Hard Training Center.

Jiu-Jitsu in Woodstock GA

This week in our Jiu-Jitsu class we have been studying attacks from the side control position. The side control position is a position of dominance in a ground fight, this is one of the positions you will try to get into if you are in an encounter on the ground.

Once you have achieved this position you have a few choices that you can attack your opponent with. You also have the choice to go to a mount position if the opportunity is presented to you. Most of the basic attacks studied in this position are joint attacks. But you also have the option of various types of striking out of this position also. It is important to study both joint attacks and striking methods out of a position, because each of them will set up the other.

It is also important to choose an attack that will allow you to maintain the position as you attack your opponent. If the attack you choose takes you out of the position of control it lowers the percentage of success that you have in whatever you have chosen to do.

This small difference is one of the things that will separate good self defense Jiu-Jitstu from a more sport based Jiu-Jitstu. Both are good but obviously there are some things you will do differently on the street then in the ring.

Jiu-Jitsu in Woodstock GA

Effortless Power

Most exercises in the west such as weight lifting, jogging, swimming, etc. works primarily on the muscular system and the lungs. The Chinese also partake in this form of exercise but they consider Chi Gung “Qigong” to be a higher level of training for the body. One difference is that Qigong loosens the muscles and expands the joints in order to build power. Aerobics, stretching and strength training will build a form of external strength and flexibility that is based on contraction in the body. The internal exercises of Qigong will build effortless power that is based on relaxation or expansion of the body. The more relaxed and open the body is, the more of its natural energy and power can be expressed.

I see this principle in our Jiu-Jitsu classes at the school. A beginning student will roll in a tensed state due to the fact that he is in a new environment and may be stressed from the new experience. But watch an advanced player roll and you will see a very relaxed attitude and a relaxed physical state. You will also notice that the more relaxed practitioner will feel much stronger and heavier than someone that is holding onto tension as they roll.

I have seen this in every form of martial art I have come in contact with. The farther along the practitioner is, the more relaxed they become and the more powerful they feel.

Gracie Jiu-Jitsu Woodstock Georgia

We are working the Quarter position this week. Quarter position is when you are face down on your hands and knees and your opponent is pinning you to the ground. we will be covering how to survive in the quarter position and how to escape the position in order to regain control on your opponent. Gracie Jiu-Jitsu teaches that a smaller, weaker person can successfully defend against a bigger, stronger assailant by using leverage and proper technique—most notably by applying joint-locks and chokeholds to defeat the other person.

Jiu-Jitsu in Woodstock GA

Last night in class we worked on headlock escapes from the side control position. The headlock is sometimes used as a submission by someone who does not have a lot of training. So it is a common attack to see on the street.

The side control headlock is also a common position for a larger opponent to try to put his way to use to crush you. This is why it is important to have a proper study of alignment and body position in order to avoid being crashed by a larger opponent. This is the great thing about good Gracie Jiu-Jitsu, it will focus on good alignment of the body in order to survive against a superior opponent in a self-defense situation on the street.

We went through several variations of escapes from this position. And finished class with active resistance training.

For more information on Gracie Jiu-Jitsu in the Woodstock GA area give us a call at the Atlanta Martial Arts Center located in Woodstock at 770-926-3030.

Jiu Jitsu in Woodstock GA

There are basically two types of jiu-jitsu Taught today. One is more sport base and the other is more self defense base. Both are great for getting in shape and improving your overall physical fitness. The difference is one will train to follow a set of rules in a competition and the other is designed to work on the street.

When choosing a school it is important to know the difference between these two methods of teaching. It is important to also know what your goals are for training, are you looking for a more competition-based game or are you looking for self defense that will work for you on the street.

A good way to know which kind of program you're getting into is to talk to the instructor and ask him what his overall focus of the program is. These are just a few things to consider if you are looking at getting into a Brazilian jiu-jitsu program in the future.

The Atlanta Martial Art Center is located in Woodstock GA and offers programs in Gracie Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Thai Boxing, Bruce Lee's Jeet Kune Do, Filipino Kali, No GI grappling, self-defense and more. for more information you can call the school at 770-926-3030 or check us out on line at atlantamartialartcenter.com.
