Jiu-Jitsu in Woodstock GA

This week in our Jiu-Jitsu class we have been studying attacks from the side control position. The side control position is a position of dominance in a ground fight, this is one of the positions you will try to get into if you are in an encounter on the ground.

Once you have achieved this position you have a few choices that you can attack your opponent with. You also have the choice to go to a mount position if the opportunity is presented to you. Most of the basic attacks studied in this position are joint attacks. But you also have the option of various types of striking out of this position also. It is important to study both joint attacks and striking methods out of a position, because each of them will set up the other.

It is also important to choose an attack that will allow you to maintain the position as you attack your opponent. If the attack you choose takes you out of the position of control it lowers the percentage of success that you have in whatever you have chosen to do.

This small difference is one of the things that will separate good self defense Jiu-Jitstu from a more sport based Jiu-Jitstu. Both are good but obviously there are some things you will do differently on the street then in the ring.
